Detroit, MI – The Canton Charge, the NBA G League franchise exclusively owned and operated by the Cleveland Cavaliers, took part in a three-team scrimmage along with the Grand Rapid Drive and Fort Wayne Mad Ants on Saturday afternoon. Each team played two, twelve minute halves against the others in a preseason contest before the start of next week’s regular season.
Grand Rapids topped Canton in the first game, 42-40, on a Dwight Buycks lay-up with 5.6 seconds left that proved to be the difference. The Charge turned the ball over 12 times resulting in 16 Drive points while hitting just 13-of-33 shots overall (39%). John Holland and Marcus Thornton each netted 9 points, while JaCorey Williams added 7 points and 5 rebounds in 16 minutes.
The Charge came out firing to start against Fort Wayne, hitting 11-of-15 shots to start (73%) and getting to the foul line 16 times in the first 12 minutes. Canton led by as many as 13 and for the entire first half behind 8 points each from Maksym Pustozvonov and Akeem Springs. The Charge maintained their advantage throughout the entire second half for a 68-58 win to even up their afternoon at 1-1. Kevin Johnson and Gerald Beverly each led the way with 11 points in the second game.
The team will wrap up training camp with a practice that follows the team’s Media Day on Thursday, November 2nd at 10:00 a.m. at Edgewood Community Center. Canton opens up the 2017-18 regular season on the road with a visit to the Greensboro Swarm on Saturday, November 4th at 7:00 p.m.
